Savor a slice of the low country

Posted: September 10, 2010 | By Danielle Walker danielle.walker@insidebiz.com

Savor, "Virginia's Low Country Cuisine," had its grand opening Sept. 8 in Virginia Beach's Great Neck Village area.

The Southern cuisine restaurant opened in the Silver Palate's former space under creator and owner Chef Walter Ellerbe, who was co-owner of The Lucky Star at the Beach, and his partner, Jacqui Ruetzel, a long-time foodie who's spent years in the restaurant business.

"It's basically a Charleston, S.C., or New Orleans Southern feel. It's classy but casual," said Ruetzel about the updated French Quarter atmosphere at the establishment.

"The cuisine is low country - classic dishes like fish and grits," she said. "Some of our signature deserts are Bananas Foster and 'Pour Amour,' 20 layers of crepes with whipped pastry crème between each one. Everything is made in-house."

Ellerbe also offers a play on desert with a sweet Sunday brunch option, Bananas Foster French Toast.

Ruetzel, who entered the restaurant business at age 18, came back to the business after a 12-year hiatus to raise her children. She was born and raised in Virginia Beach's Great Neck Village area, where the new restaurant is.

Savor will feature a full bar, a wine list and several seafood offerings, as well as Southern classics like chicken and waffles and fried green tomatoes.

Ellerbe, known as the Southern Gourmet and a well-traveled restaurateur, lives in Virginia Beach.

Lucky for East Beach

Chef Walter Ellerbe, formerly chef and co-owner of the popular Beach eatery The Lucky Star and sister restaurant, Stella Gourmet Pizzeria, is working on his next project.

Ellerbe had operated the businesses with Scott and Julie Bernheisel. The Lucky Star closed last month, citing economic reasons.

A Johnson & Wales University graduate, Ellerbe is also president of the former Norfolk campus alumni chapter. His new venture is called Ellerbe’s New World Cuisine and will be located in Norfolk’s East Beach community.

“It’s about to happen, it’s coming soon,” says Ellerbe, saying an opening date is anticipated in late spring or early summer.
